Settlement Credit

When it comes to getting out of debt, many are turning to credit settlement, more commonly known as debt settlement, as the answer. The simple truth is that aside from declaring bankruptcy, which is the worst thing you could do to your credit, the options to get out of debt quickly vary quite a bit. The problem is that many of those options can lead to more problems and many aren't aware of the truth about the options that are available to them.

It's important to know your options and to be informed enough to make the right choices when it comes to debt relief. Credit settlement may vary well be the best option for you, but before you make that choice it's important to know all of your options.

What Is Settlement Credit

The first thing we need to discuss is what “settlement credit” or “debt settlement” really means. As an option, for those with $15,000 or more in credit card debt, it's probably the best solution. However, understanding what you're doing before beginning with settlement is important.

Put simply, settling your debts is the process through which a debt counsellor works between you and your creditors to settle your debts. In this case, rather than pay off the full amount owing, the balances of the debts themselves are negotiated down. If you work with a good settlement company they will also work to ensure that after the settlement is finished your credit is protected.

The reasons this option works well for those with a large amount of unsecured debt is because it reduces the time it takes to pay off the debts. Since balances are reduced, debts are paid faster, and your credit is affected for a much shorter period of time that it would if you chose debt negotiation, or a consolidation loan as your solution to debt.

To qualify for credit settlement, you must have more than $10,000 in unsecured debts, and you must currently be unable to meet all of your monthly payments.

Settlement Compared To Other Options

Along with understanding what credit settlement is, and what it takes to qualify, it's also important to understand how it compares to other debt solutions.

Settlement Compared to Consolidation Loans – When you compare debt settlement to a consolidation loan the major difference is the time it takes to complete. While a settlement program is often over in 3 – 5 years, a consolidation loan may last 7 – 10. Worse than that, a consolidation loan usually holds your home as security, so you end up putting your home on your line for seven to ten years, and paying a horrendous amount of interest in that time frame.

Settlement Compared to Debt Negotiation – Since debt settlement reduces the balances owing, it is usually a much better solution that debt negotiation. A negotiation plan only reduces the interest rates and payment, and can often extend your debt problems for many years to come.

Settlement Compared to Bankruptcy – Since a settlement option is over quickly, it only affects your credit rating for a short period of time. On the other hand, a bankruptcy will follow you for life. Worse, with the bankruptcy law update in 2005, you often end up paying back part or all of your debt anyway.

Settlement Credit – The Bottom Line

When it really comes down to it, since it reduces debt immediately, and is over faster than any other option for debt relief, credit settlement may be your best choice.
